In this post I will review the supposedly quick and easy Steamed Egg with Tofu and Shrimp recipe that I found on Instagram. In the original Instagram post, @chellemakesfood provides very little instruction for how to actually make this dish. I will give my steps and opinion on the final results (spoiler, I would make it again!) Here are the ingredients and a picture of the finished dish.
Recipe Ingredients:
1 block of soft tofu
3 eggs
Water
Shrimp
Tapioca starch
White pepper
Salt
Rice (to serve over)
Sauce:
Oyster sauce
Soy sauce
Honey
Sesame oil
Red hot chili sauce
Making this recipe was rather simple.
- Drain the tofu and cut into cubes. Place into steam safe dish (I used a pyrex dish.)
- Whisk eggs with equal parts water and strain through a mesh strainer into the pyrex dish with the tofu.
- Place pyrex dish into a steamer and steam for 8 minutes.
- While steaming egg/tofu mix, mix shrimp with starch, salt, and pepper.
- After 8 minutes, place shrimp on top of egg/tofu mix, steam for another 5-8 minutes.
- While steaming, mix together your sauce ingredients (I strayed from the original recipe here as this is my favorite sauce combo.)
- Once shrimp are fully cooked (pink and curled), remove the dish and top with sauce.
- Serve over rice.
Here are some pictures of the steps, I used a steamer basket inside a large pot to steam the eggs mixture:
In all, this was a pretty good recipe and was easy to make. The boyfriend liked it so that is a good sign. I did change up the sauce since this is my favorite sauce combo, I’ll post a picture of the red hot chili sauce I inhale like its no one’s business. At first I thought it was too watery, but it tasted delicious and the extra moisture was good for soaking up in the rice. In all, I’d make this again when feeling lazy and wanting something quick yet satisfying.
Chili Sauce I love, I purchase this from Weee! since I cannot find it elsewhere:
